New local authority guidance on cross-pavement EV charging solutions

The UK government has released new guidance to support local authorities in England in developing cross-pavement electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions policies.
These solutions, such as Gul-e by ODS, enable residents without off-street parking to safely and conveniently charge their EVs at home by allowing charging cables to pass across or through pavements.
The guidance outlines key considerations, including regulations, safety standards, and policy design, and features case studies of successful local authority trials. The decision to permit cross-pavement installations ultimately lies with individual local authorities, however, the expert team at ODS closely collaborates with councils to trial and implement the innovative Gul-e solution.
For many residents, domestic EV charging is not only more convenient but also significantly cheaper than relying on public charging infrastructure. Cross-pavement solutions like Gul-e allow EV cables to pass across pavements safely, enabling access to domestic electricity tariffs and smart charging options for those without dedicated off-street parking.
Gary Kinzett, Business Development Manager for Gul-e at ODS, says: “We welcome the government’s new guidance on EV cross-pavement charging solutions as a vital step towards ensuring safe, accessible, and practical home charging options for those without off-street parking. This approach supports wider EV adoption, enhances pedestrian safety, and helps pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future. We look forward to continuing our work supporting local authorities around the country to bring Gul-e to their local communities.”
Gul-e is a discreet and effective cable channel solution designed to make home EV charging accessible for residents without off-street parking. By installing a narrow channel in the pavement, Gul-e allows cables to be laid securely, reducing trip hazards and adhering to safety regulations.
Key benefits of Gul-e by ODS
- Eliminates the risk of trailing cables across pavements
- Enables drivers to access flexible domestic smart tariffs for reduced charging costs
- Facilitates increased use of renewable energy
- Protects green spaces from unnecessary infrastructure
- Reduces the need for additional street furniture.
As EV adoption continues to grow, implementing safe and efficient charging solutions like Gul-e is essential. These innovations not only support residents but also contribute to broader environmental goals and sustainable urban living.
