Suffolk Launches Innovative Gul-e On-Street EV Charging Trial to Power a Greener Future For Its Residents

Suffolk joins a growing number of communities taking bold steps toward sustainable transport, offering practical solutions that support local climate goals and improve access to EV technology.

Developed by ODS in partnership with Oxford City Council’s Highways team, the Gul-e cross-pavement system addresses a key barrier for many EV drivers: how to charge at home when a driveway isn’t available. The discreet, pavement-integrated gully lets residents run a charging cable from their home to their car without posing a trip hazard or relying exclusively on public charging stations. 

Councillor Philip Fairclough-Mutton, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Communities and Equality, said: “25% of Suffolk households don’t have a driveway, and park on their street – which is often a barrier for people who would like an EV, as they have no convenient way to charge.

“So we’re exploring how we can help residents to overcome this, and the trial of charging channels is one of those potential solutions.”

“We have a track record of being pioneering with electric vehicle infrastructure in Suffolk, and this is another exciting opportunity we’re exploring.”

The pilot in Suffolk builds on the success of previous Gul-e deployments around the UK. Local residents participating in the trial will enjoy a more convenient EV lifestyle, while contributing to regional efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainable living.
