Great news for the six million UK terraced households without a driveway: getting a cross-pavement EV cable channel just got significantly easier.
From 21 October 2026, an update to England’s planning law—the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order—officially grants Permitted Development rights for cross-pavement EV charging channels (designated as Class F).
Up till now, installing a cross-pavement channel required navigating a sometimes slow, often complex and costly full planning permission application with your local council. Under the updated law, this step has been removed. Installing a dedicated cable channel like Gul-e no longer requires full planning permission.
Why is this a game-changer for your wallet?
Unlocking home charging completely changes the economics of driving an EV, because making the switch to electric is significantly cheaper. Rapid chargers can cost around 20p per mile, making them roughly equivalent to running a traditional petrol or diesel car, and competitive on-street public EV charger tariffs average around 10p per mile. But a Gul-e cross-pavement channel allows you to safely access your own domestic energy. By tapping into overnight home tariffs, your average cost drops to 2p per mile.
Homeowners will still need standard approval from their local Highway Authority, under Section 178 of the Highways Act, but the removal of the planning permission barrier makes the journey to home EV charging faster than ever before.
As a council-engineered solution built from the ground up to meet highways standards, Gul-e is uniquely positioned to help residents in terraced homes without driveways capitalise on this law change.
