High costs of public EV charging: A barrier to disabled drivers

Public EV charging remains a significant hurdle for widespread electric vehicle adoption, especially for disabled drivers. Despite falling wholesale energy prices, the cost of using public rapid and ultra-rapid chargers is still steep.

The rising cost of public EV charging

According to recent research by the RAC, the average cost for a rapid pay-as-you-go charge (50–149 kW) is nearly 80p per kilowatt hour – barely changed since the start of the year and up 28% from two years ago. This means charging a family EV from 10% to 80% now costs around £41.18, adding just 170 miles of range.

Motability Operations CEO, Andrew Miller, emphasizes, “The affordability and accessibility of public charging is crucial if the transition to electric vehicles is to be successful. Together with industry, if we can make it work for our disabled customers, it will work for all UK drivers.”

These high costs disproportionately affect disabled drivers, who are more likely to rely on public charging infrastructure due to the lack of suitable home charging options. This creates a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, undermining efforts to make the transition to EVs inclusive for all.
